Green Product Award - Germany 2021

Spriha is the most recent winner of prestigious Green Product Award - Germany 2021, recently showcased at London Design Biennale and featured in London Craft Week 2020. Over the last few months Spriha and I have been working on a unique type of packaging that is durable, sustainable, biodegradable and above all functional. The Alexander Gems & Jewels story is deeply connected to India so it is important to keep things as local as possible utilising traditional crafts and materials. I have had a Love/hate relationship with packaging and I have always been a "I don’t need the box" kind of person. While I know a lot of people appreciate packaging and it comes with its own sentiments, I wanted elements of my personality to flow through my business. So after much consideration I decided to offer people a (what I think is) revolutionary new type of 'packaging' which would change the way my customers interact with their jewellery on a daily basis and make people view packaging in a different way. Spriha and her artisans have been working to develop a first of its kind style of packaging which will also be a jewellery storage solution, allowing your jewels to be carried with you safely (will be particularly handy when we are able to travel again). I feel that working with Sprihas and her artisans utilising traditional Indian crafts and upcycled materials on project is the most exciting way to do that!

"Pick from Pulp is an initiative to continue the legacy of Indian Textiles using an alternative material. Our paper yarn is made from post- production waste fabric, which is up-cycled in paper by local craftsmen. The up-cycled paper is spun into yarn by women and woven on the handloom by master craftsmen. The fabrics are then handcrafted into accessories to create sturdy, washable, and everyday bags and accessories. Pick from Pulp is an ongoing project experimenting with Indian Textiles with paper yarn."
